How big is the backup data file?

How big is the backup data file for the PS3. Is it something I can put on a thumb drive or do I need an external HD to store it while I swap drives?

It depends on how much data is being backed up.
If it helps, my last backup was about 22 GB I think.
I have a 40 GB console and I have 4-6 GB of free space I think.

probably half of what is on your harddrive
