online backups are not safe. if someone gets fired they can get mad, take the files from random places and give it out for public download (happened before) put it on a flash drive stored in a safe

Microsoft Skydrive gives you 25 Gigabytes for free.
I love it because it has a Drag and Drop interface for multiple files (must use IE 8 browser).

Having experienced hackers help with the security hardening is good. And, in retrospect, I can see the value in an off-site backup over the net as a way to mitigate the risk of loss in case you lose your primary storage AND your on-site backup.
So long as things can be kept secure.

It depends what you’re paying for. I see your point though.
There are advantages with using servers to back-up. Remote access, solid state drives are safer and are used in backup facilities and encryption.
I heard that carbonite have hackers which try to access their servers on a daily basis, so that they can keep ‘up to date’.

I used to use Time Machine with my two Macs but now I use only Crashplan. I can back up to a 2nd computer of mine, an external hard drive, a NAS drive, a friends computer, or to Crashplan directly. All of which are free except backing up to Crashplan’s servers.

Of course, I speak as a personal computer user.
Data management for an IT department of a company is not as simple as what I’ve suggested, so the use of online backup might be one solution. But, of course, in that same kind of environment, multiple ways to backup data is supposed to be used; you can’t rely on one single way to back up so you must have redundancies.

I’d never use online backup.
There’s the concern about network security, but my bigger concern would be the integrity of data at the site that is keeping your backup.
What if the service goes down and stays down? Then your online backup is about as useful as a bad hard drive.
Just spend the money and get an external drive with a good disk cloning utility.
Considering its value, safeguarding your data is not the thing you want to skimp on.

keepITsafe provide off-site backup for business in Ireland. Ireland is very financially wealthy, politically stable, with a highly educated populace, neutral in times of war, and has never suffered a natural disaster in recorded times. If you want to outsource large amounts of business data outside the U.S, Ireland is the place to go.
